S4 are asking the question - was the Weimar Republic destined to fail? They are looking at the loyalty many Germans still felt towards the Kaiser, at the weaknesses of the new constitution and at the problems facing Ebert and the new Reichstag.
Angus says: the theory behind the new constitution was good but in practise it crashed and burned because it did not have the support of the German people.
Kerr says: yes, the new Republic failed because Germany needed a powerful leader to replace the Kaiser who was forced to abdicate.
Jennifer says: the Reichstag failed because the German people needed to blame someone for losing the war- and the new government had signed the treaty of Versailles which seemed the ultimate act of betrayal. Many Germans really believed that the new government were to blame for their war defeat- how could they give their loyalty to them?
