Enzymes and lemons

Here S4 look at the effect of changing the pH of an enzyme. This enzyme produces a substance that reacts with air to make fruit brown. If the enzyme doesn't work the fruit doesn't go brown. The class took two bites from an apple then put lemon juice on one of the bites. The side with lemon juice did not go brown as the pH changed the shape of the enzyme so it didn't work.

More enzymes!

After matching keys and locks the class race to collect as many pennies from the floor as possible. They then had their fingers taped and tried to pick up the pennies again. This was to show how any enzyme changes shape and does not fit the substrate any more. The class then made up ways to help them remember the names of enzymes and their substrates and products. Here is one - give 1 penny please sir to help them remember Glucose 1 phosphate is built up to starch by the enzyme phosphorylase.

All aboard!

S3 are designing adverts for the railways in 1880. They are using their ipads, choosing their own app. They will peer assess these posters, looking at whether the ad demonstrates understanding of why people used the railways.
