I can regularly select and read texts for enjoyment and interest and I can give reasons, with evidence, for my personal response. Lit 4-11a

This year in Standard Grade English we have started a new reading programme. To help imprive reading skills it is important to regularly read good quality journalism as this is the type of texts we analyse in close reading. Good quality journalism will stretch us to think about more complex issues and give us opportunities to see skilled writers use effective word choice and sentence structures to inform, entertain, persuade and challenge us.

Each week, a different pupil has to find an interesting article, email the link to the rest of the class and include two questions relating to the text. On a Monday, we spend the first few minutes of the lesson reading the article and then we discuss the questions as a class.

Nathan was the first to choose an article and he went for something that was relevant to his peer group and the fact that we were discussing it in and English class. Follow the link to read about school children's reading habits: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-14621621

One of the questions we discussed was if it matters if children don't read fiction as much as non-fiction, or as much as texts and emails.
